About the role

The Marketing Consultant plays a vital role in growing revenues for our portfolio companies. This is an opportunity to utilize a wide variety of marketing skills and work directly with CEOs and CMOs (or play the role of interim CMO on a consulting basis where the function doesn’t exist) with privately held companies. As such, the ideal candidate for this is the B2B marketer with Swiss army knife skills to apply to the specific needs of each client.

Responsibilities

The person will quickly assess each client’s current marketing operations and programs to diagnose and make transformational improvements in the most meaningful areas to drive revenue north. Your advice and hands-on work with our clients will help their marketing teams effectively drive customer demand, leads and sales conversions.

Work with Portfolio Company executives, CMO and internal marketing/sales teams to define and implement programs to improve marketing effectiveness. These may include building capabilities from the ground up or improving on existing programs in the following areas:

  • Assess current marketing performance relative to best practices to identify priority focus areas

  • Define or refine marketing strategies (targets, go-to-market approaches, etc.) with associated budget estimates, timelines, and revenue targets
  • Ensure a differentiated, competitive value proposition – make their sales messaging sing and resonate with prospects/customers as it is conveyed through all channels
  • Build brand recognition amongst key audiences – prospective customers, industry analysts, employees, partners, strategic acquirers, etc.
  • Setup outbound and inbound marketing programs for cost-effective demand generation to ensure a pipeline of quality leads, i.e.
    • Trade show / events management

    • Social media marketing and channel management
    • Content marketing to drive thought leadership
    • Website enhancements and digital campaigns – SEO enhancements, PPC, re-targeting, other
    • PR / earned media through thought leadership and content marketing
  • Support sales effectiveness
    • Enhance sales materials
    • Ensure no leaks in the funnel from marketing awareness and lead generation through sales conversion steps (could include implementing or updating marketing/sales automation tools such as Marketo, Salesforce, etc.)
  • Help with product marketing functions – telling the product story, improving demonstrations, packaging client success stories/testimonials, and clearly communicating product benefits/value
  • Estimate potential (and actual) impact of programs relative to time and effort investment required
  • Ensure solid marketing metrics for reporting impact
  • Ensure effective, regular two-way communication with appropriate Growth Calculus and client teams regarding marketing effectiveness, opportunities and progress
  • Augment client team’s approaches by sharing marketing best practices

Beyond direct client work, this role also involves helping with due diligence and creating intellectual property for Growth Calculus. For example:

  • Assist in marketing-related due diligence: data requirements, interviews, analysis

  • Create/refine playbooks the team uses for driving greater marketing effectiveness with clients
  • Write or contribute to articles Growth Calculus utilizes for thought leadership/content marketing

Locations/travel

  • Growth Calculus is in NY/NJ and Bozeman, Montana
    • Some preference for candidates to be in the New York city area
    • Open to other locations (particularly for candidates who have previously demonstrated superior ability to work remotely)
  • Our clients are throughout the U.S. and Canada. We do not have dedicated desks at our client sites – we travel to client sites with purpose/meetings to accomplish. Time spent on-site with clients will vary by stage of the relationship, too. Assume about 2-3 trips per month or about 30-50% travel

Candidate profile – skills & qualifications

  • Must be an expert in B2B marketing for SaaS businesses
    Minimum 7 years’ relevant experience in similar roles – must know your stuff and be able to guide clients. Must have worked recently with/in emerging growth stage B2B companies. Not interested in individuals who have been purely B2C focused or operating solely in agency roles

  • Bachelor’s degree required, MBA preferred
  • Fluent in marketing/sales automation tools such as Salesforce, Marketo, Hubspot, etc. as you will be an expert helping to guide Portfolio Companies in implementing/augmenting their marketing technology stacks
  • Has a network of talented, reliable resources to call upon for project work or specialty support to augment the team (e.g., graphic design, copywriting, video production, digital marketing execution, etc.)
  • Brings creativity plus sound logic to growth planning
  • Works independently and also not shy about asking for help
  • Great communicator. Readily uses frameworks to crystallize thinking and share ideas
